This is the last picture I have of Sam and Lauryn together before he was arrested. She had just been approved to visit him in Crowley when he was transferred up here. I told her she is very lucky to avoid the mind-numbing drive south. It's hard to believe that we already get to visit him this weekend.
Lauryn will get to hug her brother for the first time in nearly two years. This time, we can even take (sealed, store bought) food to him. I have already procured the hottest bag of chips I could find and multiple packs of Oreo cookies. I never sent him money for commissary in Crowley because luxuries can be bartered. Now, however, the simple joy of him eating food he enjoys warms my heart.
When Sam and Lauryn talk on the phone, the conversation often reverts to food. He loves to eat and she loves to cook. The two of them discuss what dishes she will cook for him in the future. Last night she told me that she thought she had several years, not months, to practice making the Oreo cake he wants when he is released! This is potentially a really beautiful problem to have.
Lauryn is often quiet about Sam. She, more than any of us, must feel like she has been along for the ride, just hanging on. I have been looking forward to their reunion because they adore each other. She needs him to be her older brother and he needs her just as much. He needs to be reminded that his actions matter, that precious souls like her need him.
Lauryn is sweet and innocent and she is a beautiful young woman from the inside out. She is pure and kind and empathetic. Her steadfast commitment to all that is important to her is inspiring. I have learned, and continue to learn, so much from her and I hope Sam will too.
I hope he will choose to be at her graduation, and her wedding, and be an uncle to her children someday.
